Brrrrrr, it's cold outside!
Winter is here in full force, and not just in North America and Europe, but also in much of Asia. Not that it matters all that much this year, as with the Covid lockdowns most of us aren't spending a lot of time outside anyway. Thankfully, there are options to keep us entertained while we stay warm and cozy indoors. Two of my favorite ways to pass the time are to read historical novels and to play historical board games.

I have been playing historical board games all of my life. From playing to designing was a short step, and my 26th published game is coming out this year.
The game is Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East, the second in the series which began with Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea. A third title on East Asia is in the design stage, and a fourth, on the Americas, is in the planning stage. These games let you play as one of the many empires, kingdoms, and peoples of the era. You can play them alone or with up to five other people (they come with full solitaire rules).

In Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea, for example, you can be the Romans, Phoenicians, Egyptians, or any of seven other major civilizations around the Mediterranean. You can even refight the Persian invasions of Greece or Alexander the Great's early years campaign (which are covered in the first three books of my Throne of Darius novels). In Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East, there are 17 playable civilizations to choose from. The map covers the entirety of the Persian Empire, and there is a scenario that covers Alexander's ten year campaign to conquer the world - which forms the backdrop for my eight-volume Throne of Darius series.
